I was recently in a relationship in which class differences festered underneath the surface - rarely acknowledged, but always present. My anger at perceived inequities built and built, until I picked the pettiest possible moment to lash out at my partner. It was a confusing, messy, nightmarish fight, about nothing and also about everything, that haunts me to this day.

Callback is about jealousy and class. But it’s also about how relationships become arenas for performance — how we perform care, support, success, even intimacy — and how that performance can curdle into resentment when one partner feels left behind.

Ultimately, Callback follows two people who love each other deeply, but can’t quite stop themselves from needing to win. And in that way, it’s a story about something I think we all fear — the moment when love becomes competition.
